About Barbara

Hello and welcome to my woolly world of feltmaking and other creative arts.

As far back as I can remember Mum was a very creative hands on influence as she knitted, crochet and was a very accomplished dressmaker, making clothes for her 5 daughters and two sons; I know quite a handful! she was our super Mum. So it was no surprise that I found that my interests followed a natural progression in the love of all things handmade, especially textiles.

I worked in the Textile industry and trained as a Interior Designer in a family run business for many years in Bridlington.

In 1996 as a mature student and single parent I worked really hard to complete a textile design degree (BA Hons)

it was tough holding down 2 jobs p/t and juggling everything in the air, but I became great at juggling :-), it strengthens the character and determination to do well to get out of a difficult time, I came out with flying colours!

I then went on to teach in Further Education for 13 years! Teaching adults with additional needs in Foundation Learning & then within the arts health teams for Mind and in hospitals.  I would also apply for funding to set up and run a whole range of creative community projects, I loved this work and teaching arts for health, it was extreamly rewarding and fun.

I had also discovered feltmaking! And continued to dabble in being creative for myself and as I have always been fascinated at how the natural fibres can so easily be blended, loving the painterly effects that can be created with natural fluffy and stranded fibres, the textures that can be added and how three dimensional forms can easily be created…..when you know how! I became hooked on working with the fibres.

I also have a love of painting and dyeing processes. I teach Batik, Mono Print and Gelli Plate Printing in addition to feltmaking.

I particularly enjoy the process and calmness while working with the fibres. My students, whether adults, children or disadvantaged groups all say how therapeutic feltmaking is and how you can completely immerse yourself in the process and forget everything else while creating beautiful artwork.

My other interests involve recycling unloved furniture, interior decoration, walking, pilates and travel to name a few.
